The same year that D.W. Griffith created Birth of a Nation (and gave a barrage of interviews in which he lied about inventing the close up), director Lois Weber -- aesthetically and morally superior to her more famous and mendacious contemporary -- made her masterpiece Hypocrites.
A savage satire of the hypocrisy of organized religion, it features a nude, double-exposed woman who represents -- you guessed it! -- "The Naked Truth." (The film was released one month before SCOTUS declared that the First Amendment didn't cover movies.)
It's (certainly) daring!
